The interest in using domestically grown bamboo for crafting and construction is flourishing in the USA, and I’m thrilled to be a part of this exciting movement. This year, I conducted two bamboo craftsmanship workshops that provided a platform for participants to explore the potential of this versatile and sustainable material.
The first workshop, held in sunny Florida, focused on building functional and decorative garden structures using treated and dried construction-grade bamboo. This allowed participants to delve into design and construction techniques without worrying about material preparation. We created a variety of whimsical and practical structures, including a one-of-a-kind bamboo light fixture, a Japanese-inspired arbor perfect for climbing plants, and a playful climbing tetrahedron.
The second workshop, hosted by the Louisiana chapter of the American Bamboo Society, catered to a diverse group of students ranging from 34 to 84 years old. This workshop truly embodied the spirit of community and shared passion for bamboo. Many participants arrived with specific projects in mind, and the workshop provided the guidance and support to translate their ideas into reality.
Many thanks to Kathleen Whitehurst who organized the Louisiana workshop!
